Spa Getaways Ontario

Couples Spa Retreat
spa-2Overheard at a downtown bistro …

Shelly, you look amazing! What have you been doing?

You won’t believe me, but I just spent the weekend doing nothing! Well, that’s not entirely true; I spent the weekend away with Peter being pampered and waited on, he said it was a spa getaways Ontario package.

That sounds like fun, how did you manage to get him to do that?

He didn’t do it; he was pampered and waited on too! He made reservations for us at the Benmiller Inn and Spa and took me there for our anniversary. We wined and dined, got massages at the Spa and took in all the beautiful sights in Goderich.

Wow, I wish I could get John to take me there. But our anniversary isn’t for a few months.

Do you really have to wait for a special occasion? It was so much fun there, I’ll bet you could make your own reservations and take him! In fact, why don’t you let me look after the kids this weekend and you can go right away? And next month, you can do the same for me, so we can go again. I can’t wait to go back!

What else do they have?

Scallops Smoked Tomato Capallini

Here is their website … www.benmiller.ca … spa packages … Look, he must have booked the “Spalicious Package.” We had an amazing dinner in the Ivey Dining Room and breakfast the next morning. Plus, we both had massages and hung out in the hot tub. Hey! We could have had chocolate-dipped strawberries too. If I had made the reservations, I would certainly have ordered those! The Spa has all kinds of beauty treatments too. I might go with a friend next time and leave Peter at home. Then I can have a whole day of pampering. Would you want to go with me?

I’ll tell you what, let me go with John first and I bet that we will have such a good time like you did, that I will want to make any excuse to go back!

Okay, here’s the number: 1-800-265-1711. Or look, you can go online or send email too: guestservices@benmiller.ca. What could be easier?

Let’s toast to being pampered!

I like the sounds of that!

Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is a modern celebration honouring mothers of all kinds. Family gatherings often include mothers who are part of the family by birth or marriage, plus mothers who are friends of the family and their children and grandchildren. Anyone who has or had a mother can be found celebrating a day that celebrates the most honourable of all occupations; motherhood.

The modern celebration of Mother’s Day began in the U.S. in the early 20th century. It is closely related to other celebrations of mothers and motherhood that have occurred throughout the world over thousands of years.

It is reported that Mother’s Day was first celebrated in 1908, when Mrs. Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother in West Virginia. She campaigned to make “Mother’s Day” a recognized holiday in the United States 1905, the same year that her beloved mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, died. Anna wanted to honour her own mother and to set aside a day to honor all mothers. In 1914, US President, Woodrow Wilson, signed the proclamation creating Mother’s Day, the second Sunday in May, as a national holiday to honor mothers.

How do you celebrate Mother’s Day?

In North America, families have celebrated Mother’s Day in many ways. For example:

  • Breakfast in bed for Mom
  • A day for the family to be together
  • Gather the extended family and all the family friends
  • Celebrate in the tradition of your homeland
  • Give Mom the day off
  • Help a mother in need

A fine tradition

In Ontario, we are very fortunate to have many fine establishments at which we can celebrate Mother’s Day with our families. At the Benmiller Inn & Spa in Goderich, for instance, Mother’s Day is an annual event, welcoming mothers and families from far and wide.

Brunch or Dinner

The award-winning The Ivey Dining Room is pleased to honour Mother’s Day with a special Brunch that has been very popular over the years. Also well-regarded, is dinner, featuring their Spring Menu. Either way, it can be assured that mothers and families will enjoy the warm and friendly hospitality of the Ivey Dining Room at the Benmiller Inn & Spa on Mother’s Day and every day.

Be sure to make your reservations soon, to avoid disappointment.

stay-at-home-mom_page_2014What is mom worth?  According to a survey done by Salary.com which studied the activities of over 15,000 moms in the USA, recording how much time they spend on various jobs within the house, on average, a stay-at-home mom works 96.5 hours per week. If you break that down into job titles such as housekeeper, CEO, taxi cab driver, etc. and apply the appropriate salary to each position, a stay at home mom’s salary would be $118,905 USD per year. A working mom averages 59.4 hours per week and using the same rating system, would earn a total salary of $70,107 USD. Of course, salary averages can vary, based on the number and ages of children within the home.

Moms everywhere are underpaid and under appreciated.

working-mom_page_2014

You may not have the $70-100 thousand dollars to pay mom what she is worth.  However studies of employees shows that job satisfaction and feeling appreciated are more important to many people than the salary they make.

Many moms would say they that feel under appreciated within the home.  A little appreciation can go a long way when it come to showing her how much she is worth. Consid0er the following to show your own appreciation:

Say thanks.

It may seem like I am stating the obvious, but how many times have you as a husband, son or daughter taken the time to say a simple thank you? Have there been occasions when you came home to see that she had cleaned the house, after driving you to activities or taking the time to listen to you complain about your day? Did it occur to you to say thank you? Although she likely doesn’t expect you to say thank you, your doing so can bring about a little twinge of happiness in mom.

Know that gratitude encourages repeat performance.

If mom makes a wonderful dinner that you truly enjoy, be sure to tell her how much you love it. The likelihood of her preparing the same dish again is greatly increased when she knows how much her family loves it. Even if the dish takes her a significant amount of time to prepare, she will consider it a labour of love knowing that it will bring joy to her family when they get to taste it. (In fact, she most likely already does consider her work for you to be labours of love. Your acknowledgement just makes it all seem even more worthwhile.)

Remember it is the thought that counts.

Sometimes things don’t always work out the way mom planned them. Let’s say mom scheduled a family camping trip. She worked in advance to find the best camp ground, organized everyone’s schedule, went shopping, got camping supplies ready and packed everything. Imaging that on the morning of the scheduled camping trip, you wake up to a massive rain storm. Knowing that it would be no fun for anyone to set up the tent in the pouring rain and spend the day and night trying to stay dry, mom decides to cancel the trip. Your initial reaction may be to complain, groan and sulk that you didn’t get to go. Mom could be left feeling guilty and discouraged. The fallout from this reaction is that mom might think twice about planning these types of events in the future, for fear that things may not always turn out as planned. Rather than complaining and leaving mom feeling guilty, perhaps you could consider this reaction: “What a shame that it didn’t work out. I know how much work you put into planning this trip, and I really appreciate it. Maybe we could go on that trip another weekend. Just so that all your hard work does not go to waste, why don’t we pitch the tent in the living room and we can play board games and pretend that we are camping right here at home?” Your mom would gladly play along, knowing that her family appreciates her and still wants to have fun together, no matter what the situation.

Be prepared with kind words.

Mom’s get stressed out too and sometimes need to just vent. If she complains or even lays into a lecture that you never seem to help out around the house, your first reaction might be to become defensive and react with something like “Whatever,” or “Well, you don’t need to get all bent out of shape over it!” Consider using some kind words that add to increased communication like “I didn’t know you were feeling that way; I will go do that now.” or “I will try and do that better next time.” These simple kind words when mom is feeling stressed can help to quickly defuse the situation and leave mom feeling more understood and that her feelings have been validated.

A token of your appreciation goes a long way.

Yes, she may not say it, but waking up on Mother’s Day and not being recognized for all she does all year long is a lot like going through your birthday with no one wishing you a happy birthday, no birthday cake and no gifts. It is the one day of the year she is hoping you will show her how much you love her. Following are some ways that mom’s everywhere would appreciate on Mother’s Day.

  • Not having to cook. Consider taking mom out for breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner.
  • A day of pampering. Moms don’t always get the time to relax, take time for themselves and pamper themselves. Consider giving mom the day off or a day away. Whether spending a relaxing day at home reading a book, watching TV, taking a bath without being disturbed or asked to do something can be a welcome break. Or take it one step further … consider giving mom a night away where she doesn’t have to take care of anyone else, or a spa treatment where she will be pampered.
  • Cards, flowers, chocolates or gifts. Yes, these simple items will bring a smile to mom’s face and make her feel loved.

Whether you are a mom, know a mom or ever had a mom, we want to wish you a very Happy Mother’s Day and extend our sincere thanks for all that mom’s do!

Yes, we are open on Family Day ~ Celebrate your family with us!

file000412558343WHAT IS FAMILY DAY?

Family Day was first held in Canada in the Province of Alberta in 1990. The holiday was designed to reflect the values of family and home that were important to the pioneers who first founded the Province of Alberta and to give modern-day workers an opportunity to spend time with their families. Family Day was introduced into the Province of Saskatchewan in 2007 and then, to the Province of Ontario in 2008. British Columbia followed suit and has observed Family Day as a statutory holiday since 2013. Those who live in the provinces that celebrate the holiday are pleased to have a break in the long period when in the past, there were no holidays from New Year’s Day until Good Friday.

Did you know that holidays celebrating families are also held in other countries? For instance, in South Africa, the day after Easter Sunday is known as Family Day. In the Australian Capital Territory, the first Tuesday of November is celebrated as Family and Community Day.

HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY

February 14th is Valentine’s Day. In addition to Canada, Valentine’s Day is celebrated in the United States, Australia, Mexico (día de San Valentín y la amistad), France (Saint Valentin), and the United Kingdom. In Great Britain, celebrating Valentine’s Day was thought to begin around the 17th century. In the middle of the 18th century, friends and lovers of all social classes would give each other personal tokens of affection, including handwritten notes. Printed cards were first produced in the early 1900s.

TRADITIONAL GIFTS

Valentine’s Day is truly a day set apart to remind your significant other of how much you care. The most traditional of gifts (in addition to printed cards) are flowers, lingerie and boxes of chocolates. Perhaps this is the year that you will break away from traditions.

A wonderful way to achieve this, is to have a “Spa Experience.” Take time to enjoy being pampered in an ideal setting.
